Pakistan Railways Adds Extra Coaches to Manage Passenger Rush Amid Transport Closures

With much of Rawalpindi’s public transport network paralyzed due to ongoing protests and road closures, Pakistan Railways has stepped in to assist stranded commuters. The rail authority announced the addition of extra coaches to trains departing from Rawalpindi Railway Station in an effort to accommodate the growing passenger load.

The decision comes after chaotic scenes unfolded at Rawalpindi Railway Station on Sunday, where thousands of passengers gathered in search of alternative travel options. Long queues for tickets formed early in the morning, as commuters struggled to reach workplaces, educational institutions, and other destinations following the suspension of metro bus services and closure of major roadways.

Increased Passenger Volume Prompts Action

A spokesperson for Pakistan Railways confirmed that all trains are currently operating on schedule, but the sheer number of passengers forced authorities to expand capacity. “Extra coaches have been attached to accommodate the surge and ensure people can travel safely and comfortably,” the official said.

The traffic disruption has been caused by the continued closure of Rawalpindi Expressway, Faizabad, and IJP Road, as well as containers blocking the Faizabad Interchange. Alternative routes such as Khanna Pul, Kuri Road, and Dhoke Kala Khan also remain sealed, severely limiting mobility across the twin cities.

Citywide Closures and Commuter Impact

Several key entry points to Rawalpindi, including Waris Khan, Committee Chowk, Sixth Road, Shamsabad, Rawal Road, Shaheen Chowk, Saddar, and the old airport area, have also been closed, bringing citywide movement to a standstill. The gridlock has not only disrupted daily commuting but also affected emergency services, business logistics, and hospital access.

For many residents, Pakistan Railways has become the only viable mode of intercity transport, as highways and expressways remain inaccessible. The addition of extra coaches has been welcomed by passengers who were otherwise left stranded due to the shutdown of the metro bus network and local public transport routes.

Authorities Urge Caution and Patience

Authorities have urged citizens to plan travel in advance, allow for extra time, and avoid unnecessary journeys until the situation stabilizes. Travelers are also encouraged to stay informed through Pakistan Railways’ official helplines and social media updates for schedule changes and ticket availability.

The temporary measures underscore the importance of rail transport as a lifeline during citywide disruptions, offering an essential alternative for mobility in times of crisis.
