The National Highways and Motorway Police (NHMP) has announced revised speed limits for vehicles traveling on motorways and highways across Pakistan as part of the federal government’s fuel conservation strategy.
According to the NHMP, the new speed limits are aimed at reducing fuel consumption and supporting national efforts to manage energy resources more efficiently amid rising fuel costs and growing pressure on the country’s energy supply.
New Speed Limits for Cars and Light Vehicles
Under the revised policy, motorcars and light transport vehicles (LTV) will now be allowed to travel at a maximum speed of 100 kilometers per hour on motorways. On national highways, the speed limit for these vehicles has been set at 80 kilometers per hour.
Previously, many motorways allowed higher speeds for cars, but the reduction is expected to help drivers save fuel while maintaining safer road conditions.
Officials say that driving at moderate speeds improves fuel efficiency because vehicles consume significantly more fuel when traveling at very high speeds due to increased engine load and air resistance.
Lower Limits for Buses and Heavy Transport Vehicles
The new policy also introduces reduced limits for larger vehicles, including public service vehicles (PSV) and heavy transport vehicles (HTV).
Under the revised rules:
- Maximum speed on motorways for PSV and HTV: 90 km/h
- Maximum speed on highways for PSV and HTV: 65 km/h
Authorities believe these limits will help improve road safety while also reducing fuel consumption among large commercial vehicles, which typically consume more fuel than smaller vehicles.
Part of Federal Fuel Conservation Measures
The speed limit adjustment is part of broader measures introduced by the federal government to control fuel usage and reduce pressure on national energy resources. With global fuel prices fluctuating and domestic energy demands rising, authorities are encouraging policies that promote energy efficiency.
The NHMP stated that enforcing lower speed limits will not only conserve fuel but also contribute to smoother traffic flow and fewer road accidents.
Drivers Urged to Follow New Rules
The Motorway Police has urged motorists to strictly follow the revised speed limits while traveling on motorways and highways. Authorities warned that traffic violations related to overspeeding may result in fines and penalties.
Officials emphasized that public cooperation is essential for the success of the fuel conservation initiative. By adhering to the new limits, drivers can help reduce fuel consumption, lower travel costs, and contribute to national efforts aimed at energy sustainability.
The NHMP added that enforcement teams will continue monitoring highways and motorways to ensure compliance with the updated regulations.
