The Pakistan Goods Transport Alliance has strongly opposed the federal government’s recent decision to increase petroleum product prices, calling it a move that adds unbearable financial pressure on the already struggling transport sector.
Alliance President Malik Shahzad Awan said that transporters cannot absorb repeated hikes in petrol and diesel rates, warning that the decision will have a direct impact on freight costs, consumers, and the overall economy.
Fare Increase Announced
In response to the government’s move, the Alliance has announced a 3% increase in transport fares across the sector. Malik Shahzad Awan further cautioned that if the government does not reconsider the price hike, transport unions will be forced to take additional steps in the coming days, hinting at possible protests or strikes.
Latest Fuel Prices in Pakistan
The development follows the Ministry of Finance’s notification on revised petroleum prices for the next two weeks. According to the announcement:
- Petrol price has been raised by Rs. 4.07 per litre, reaching Rs. 268.68 per litre.
- High-speed diesel (HSD) has gone up by Rs. 4.04 per litre, now priced at Rs. 276.81 per litre.
The new rates took effect immediately after the official notification.
Impact on Transport and Economy
Industry experts have warned that continuous fuel price hikes directly affect the transport sector, which in turn increases the cost of goods and services for ordinary citizens. Transporters argue that they are left with no choice but to pass on the added costs to customers, resulting in rising inflation across essential commodities.
Malik Shahzad Awan emphasized that unless the government stabilizes fuel prices, the situation could escalate further, potentially leading to disruptions in goods transportation across Pakistan.
Calls for Government Action
The Pakistan Goods Transport Alliance has urged the federal government to review its decision on fuel prices, arguing that frequent hikes destabilize the sector and hurt both businesses and consumers. With growing discontent among transport unions, failure to address the issue may result in nationwide strikes or other demonstrations in the near future.
