A team of postgraduate students from NED University has made a groundbreaking achievement in Pakistan’s automotive sector by unveiling the country’s first self-driving electric vehicle. This innovation is expected to have a transformative impact on Pakistan’s transportation industry, marking a significant leap in autonomous vehicle technology.

A Revolutionary Development in Pakistan’s Automotive Sector

The engineering students successfully designed a driverless car capable of independently reaching its assigned destination. While self-driving technology is widely used globally, its introduction in Pakistan is a major milestone. Understanding the unique challenges of local roads, the team equipped their vehicle with an advanced detection system that identifies and responds to potholes and uneven surfaces, ensuring safety and efficiency on Pakistan’s diverse infrastructure.

Potential for Urban and Intercity Transport

A faculty supervisor overseeing the project emphasized the vast potential of this self-driving technology. Beyond urban commuting, the system could be integrated into heavy-duty vehicles such as buses and trucks, revolutionizing intercity travel. The success of this project opens the door for further research and development in autonomous transportation across the country.

A Legacy of Innovation at NED University

This is not the first time NED University students have demonstrated excellence in electric vehicle (EV) development. In 2021, a group of students successfully built Pakistan’s second Formula Electric Sports Car, following a similar achievement by NUST. This latest milestone further establishes NED as a leading institution in the field of automotive engineering and smart mobility solutions.

Performance and Technical Specifications

One of the project team members shared that the idea was initially envisioned by their engineering department seniors. The vehicle was developed at an approximate cost of Rs3.5 million and boasts a top speed of 120 km/h, with an average operational speed of 60–70 km/h. Despite facing challenges related to battery backup and motor efficiency, the team successfully overcame these obstacles, bringing the project to completion.

The Future of Autonomous Vehicles in Pakistan

The development of this self-driving electric vehicle marks a significant step toward modernizing Pakistan’s transportation industry. This innovation highlights the country’s growing potential in advanced automotive technology and sets the stage for future breakthroughs in autonomous and electric vehicles.

With ongoing advancements in AI-powered mobility solutions, Pakistan is poised to embrace a smarter and more sustainable transportation future, thanks to the visionary efforts of its young engineers at NED University.
