Lahore to Launch Pakistan’s First All-Electric Urban Tram: The Super Autonomous Rapid Transit (SART)

For the first time in history, Pakistan is set to launch an all-electric urban tram service in Lahore — the Super Autonomous Rapid Transit (SART). This innovative transport system blends the spacious design of a tram with the flexibility of a bus, all while using cutting-edge virtual track technology.

A Tram Without Rails

Unlike traditional trams that run on steel rails, SART operates on rubber tyres and follows virtual tracks using GPS, sensors, and computer systems. This design eliminates the need for expensive rail infrastructure, making it faster and cheaper to set up. A trained driver remains on board to ensure safety, even though most navigation is automated.

Passenger Comfort and Capacity

Each SART vehicle consists of three air-conditioned coaches with a total capacity of up to 320 passengers — significantly higher than regular buses. Onboard features include free Wi-Fi, CCTV security, large digital route displays, and a smoother, quieter ride with minimal vibration compared to diesel-powered buses.

Eco-Friendly Technology

The tram runs entirely on electricity, producing zero emissions. A full charge enables travel of around 40 km, while a 10-minute fast charge adds about 27 km of range, ensuring minimal downtime during operations.

Pilot Route and Free Rides

The trial service will run along Canal Road, from Thokar Niaz Baig to Harbanspura, one of Lahore’s busiest corridors. During the pilot phase, rides will be free, allowing residents to experience the system before regular fares are introduced.

Local and Future Expansion

Initially imported from Norinco International of China, locally assembled versions are planned, with slightly reduced capacity (about 250 passengers) but the same technology and comfort. If successful, the Punjab government aims to expand SART to other cities, including Faisalabad and Gujranwala, eventually creating a province-wide electric transit network in up to 30 cities.
