In a decisive step towards a greener and more self-reliant future, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has directed that Pakistan establish a complete electric vehicle ecosystem to cut fuel costs, protect the environment, and strengthen the local industry.
Chairing a high-level meeting in Islamabad, the Prime Minister said that encouraging the widespread use of electric vehicles (EVs) will help Pakistan save billions of dollars in valuable foreign exchange currently spent on importing fuel. The Pakistan electric vehicle ecosystem will also reduce carbon emissions and promote sustainable growth.
The Prime Minister ordered the preparation of a comprehensive action plan to make electric vehicles affordable and accessible for the common citizen. The policy will cover the entire supply chain, from local manufacturing and battery production to after-sales maintenance and easy financing.
As an incentive for students, the federal government will provide free electric bikes to top-performing students from all educational boards, including the federal board. This move aims to reward academic excellence and promote clean commuting among youth.
To support job creation, unemployed individuals will receive electric rickshaws and loaders on a priority basis under easy loan terms. The government’s goal is to help people earn a livelihood while promoting eco-friendly transport options.
Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif stressed the need for third-party validation of the entire process — from manufacturing and distribution to financing — to ensure transparency, accountability, and fair delivery of benefits.
The government has allocated a 25% quota for women under the new electric vehicle schemes to boost female participation in green mobility. The Prime Minister also directed that Balochistan’s quota be increased to 10% to ensure fair representation and regional balance.
Under the ambitious plan, over 100,000 electric bikes and more than 300,000 electric rickshaws and loaders will be made available through low-cost loans and subsidies. The scheme will also ensure that all electric vehicles meet high safety and quality standards.
Officials informed the meeting that four new battery manufacturing companies are starting operations in Pakistan to support the upcoming surge in demand for electric vehicles. This development is expected to create new business opportunities and generate thousands of green jobs.
The Prime Minister instructed the relevant departments to launch a public awareness campaign to educate citizens about how to benefit from the electric vehicle initiatives. The campaign will help ensure that low-income and deserving groups can easily access these schemes.
Federal Ministers Ahad Khan Cheema, Attaullah Tarar, Special Assistant Haroon Akhtar, Chief Coordinator Mosharraf Zaidi, and senior officials attended the meeting to finalize proposals. PM Shehbaz Sharif has instructed all relevant departments to ensure the timely launch of Pakistan’s electric vehicle ecosystem.
With clear goals and concrete actions, Pakistan is on track to transform its transport sector, reduce fuel dependency, cut emissions, and drive economic growth through sustainable mobility.
