In a major step towards cleaner and greener urban mobility, Lahore is all set to become home to Pakistan’s first Electric Tram Service. Following the successful introduction of electric buses and the Orange Line Metro Train, the new electric trams are part of the government’s continued push for eco-friendly public transport in the provincial capital.
Imported Electric Trams for Sustainable Urban Travel
According to an official spokesperson for the Orange Line project, the government has ordered advanced electric trams from China to support sustainable travel and reduce the city’s carbon footprint. Each modern tram is designed to travel 25 to 27 kilometres after just 10 minutes of charging, making them highly efficient for daily operations on busy city routes.
Pilot Route: Thokar Niaz Baig to Harbanspura
As part of the launch, the first pilot route for the Pakistan Electric Tram Service has been announced. The trial line will run from Thokar Niaz Baig to Harbanspura, covering key urban areas and helping commuters move quickly and comfortably.
Each tram will feature a three-compartment design and will be able to carry up to 250 passengers at a time — offering a high-capacity, modern alternative to conventional road transport. The first batch of trams is already being assembled at the Ali Town Depot in Lahore.
Free Service During Trial Phase
To encourage maximum public participation and gather feedback, the government has confirmed that the initial tram service will be free of cost. Once the trial is successfully completed and adjustments are made, an affordable ticketing system will be introduced for regular commuters.
“This project is a major milestone for Lahore’s sustainable transport goals,” the Orange Line spokesperson stated, highlighting the government’s commitment to clean mobility and modern infrastructure.
A Greener Future for Lahore
By introducing Pakistan’s first electric trams, Lahore is setting an example for other cities to follow in tackling traffic congestion and air pollution through smart, energy-efficient solutions. The new service will complement the existing Metro Bus, Orange Line, Speedo feeder buses, and Electro Green Buses — further expanding Lahore’s integrated, eco-friendly public transport network.
