By In a decisive step toward fully digitizing toll collection, the National Highways Authority (NHA) has announced a 50% surcharge on tolls for all non-M-Tag and low-balance vehicles using Pakistan’s motorways. This policy will take effect on June 15, 2025, as part of the government’s ongoing push for a 100% M-Tag system across the national highway network.
The move was formalized through an official notification under Section 10(2)(vii) of the NHA Act-1991, as amended in 2024. The new rates apply across major motorways in the country, significantly increasing the toll burden for non-compliant vehicles.
New Toll Rates Announced
The revised tolls apply to a wide range of motorways, including:
• M-1 (Islamabad–Peshawar)
• M-2 (Lahore–Islamabad)
• M-3 (Lahore–Abdul Hakim)
• M-4 (Pindi Bhattian–Multan)
• M-5 (Multan–Sukkur)
• M-9 (Karachi–Hyderabad)
• M-14 (D.I. Khan–Hakla)
• E-35 (Hassanabdal–Mansehra Expressway)
Below are some of the newly adjusted tolls for cars after applying the 50% surcharge:
• Islamabad–Lahore (M2): Rs1,800
• Lahore–Abdul Hakim (M3): Rs1,200
• Pindi Bhattian–Multan (M4): Rs1,600
• Multan–Sukkur (M5): Rs1,800
• D.I. Khan–Hakla (M14): Rs1,000
• Hassanabdal–Mansehra (E35): Rs450
For larger vehicles:
• 2 and 3 axle trucks (Lahore–Islamabad): Rs7,900
• Articulated trucks: Rs10,200
Urgent Advisory to Motorists
The NHA has urged all motorists to register for M-Tags and maintain sufficient balance in their accounts to avoid the 50% surcharge. The M-Tag system is aimed at ensuring smoother traffic flow, reducing congestion at toll plazas, and promoting digital payments.
This latest enforcement reflects the government’s broader efforts to digitize infrastructure operations and enhance transparency and efficiency in toll collection systems nationwide. Motorists failing to comply after June 15 will face significantly higher travel costs across Pakistan’s motorway network.
