In a move aimed at easing traffic congestion in Rawalpindi, the Nawaz Sharif Flyover on Adiala Road has been officially opened to traffic, even as finishing touches remain on adjoining service roads. The flyover, which spans 1,915 feet in length and 52 feet in width, has been constructed at a cost of Rs 2.113 billion under the supervision of the Communication and Works Department.

According to a senior department official, the decision to open the flyover before the completion of service roads was made to divert heavy traffic and accelerate the final phase of construction. The carpeting of service roads is expected to be finished within a week, while relocation of electricity poles will take an additional 2 to 3 days. Decorative elements and lighting installations have already been completed, giving the structure a modern and polished look.

GPO Underpass Nears Completion

In parallel, work on the highly anticipated GPO double-barrel underpass on The Mall is progressing swiftly. The 1-kilometer-long underpass, being constructed at a cost of Rs 4.6 billion, aims to make The Mall a signal-free corridor, enhancing connectivity between TM Chowk (GHQ) and Military Hospital.

Despite the Eid holidays, construction teams continued work on-site. Carpeting and water drainage infrastructure have already been finalized, and service road development is in full swing. The project is expected to be completed by June 20, benefiting an estimated 250,000 vehicles per day and significantly reducing travel time and traffic bottlenecks in the city center.

Inauguration by Chief Minister Expected

According to sources, Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz is scheduled to inaugurate both the Nawaz Sharif Flyover and the GPO Underpass on June 20, underscoring the provincial government’s commitment to improving Rawalpindi’s urban infrastructure.
