In a major push to resolve Rawalpindi’s chronic traffic congestion, Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif has inaugurated two key infrastructure projects: the Nawaz Sharif Flyover on Adiala Road and the GPO Chowk Underpass on Mall Road. Together, these long-awaited projects, costing a total of Rs. 8.77 billion, are expected to significantly ease traffic flow and reduce travel times for thousands of daily commuters.

Nawaz Sharif Flyover — A New Lifeline for Rawalpindi Traffic

The newly opened Nawaz Sharif Flyover is strategically located on Adiala Road and is designed to facilitate traffic moving from Katcheri Chowk towards GT Road, Rawalpindi Ring Road, and Chakri Interchange. The flyover includes a 2-kilometer-long service road, providing additional relief for local traffic in busy areas such as Adiala, Gorakhpur, Khalsa Khurd, and Jarar Camp.

Officials estimate that the flyover will help reduce bottlenecks during peak hours, allowing smoother access for commercial vehicles and residents alike. This project is part of a larger plan to decongest Rawalpindi’s main arteries and improve connectivity with the Islamabad Expressway and other adjoining highways.

GPO Chowk Underpass — A Step Towards a Signal-Free Mall Road

The second major project, the GPO Chowk Underpass, is an integral component of a signal-free corridor along Mall Road. This underpass aims to ensure uninterrupted traffic flow in one of Rawalpindi’s busiest zones. Equipped with an intelligent traffic signal system and a pedestrian underpass near the Armed Forces Institute of Cardiology (AFIC), the project enhances safety for both motorists and pedestrians.

The underpass will particularly benefit patients and visitors heading to nearby medical facilities like Combined Military Hospital (CMH), Military Hospital (MH), and AFIC. Moreover, it will improve access to Sadar Bazaar, the Rawalpindi Railway Station, and surrounding commercial areas — all vital for the city’s daily economic activities.

Transforming Rawalpindi’s Infrastructure

Both the flyover and underpass are part of 67 road projects covering 607 kilometers in Rawalpindi District. So far, 51 projects have been completed under the provincial government’s ambitious infrastructure plan.

Speaking at the inauguration, Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif commended the tireless efforts of the Rawalpindi Development Authority (RDA) and other departments involved. She emphasized that these projects will provide much-needed relief to the city’s residents, who have long suffered due to traffic jams and outdated road networks.

According to government estimates, more than 300,000 vehicles are expected to use the new flyover and underpass every day, ensuring smoother, safer, and faster commutes for Rawalpindi’s growing population.

Our Verdict

With the inauguration of the Nawaz Sharif Flyover and GPO Chowk Underpass, Rawalpindi takes a significant step forward in modernizing its road infrastructure. These projects promise to cut travel times, boost connectivity, and improve quality of life — aligning with the Punjab government’s vision of a modern, well-connected Rawalpindi.
