As the winter season approaches, the Murree administration has enforced a strict, non-negotiable snowfall management protocol aimed at preventing traffic congestion, ensuring public safety, and maintaining uninterrupted access for emergency services. The measures come in response to an early warning issued by the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA), signaling increased snowfall activity in the region.
The core objective of the new plan is to keep Murree’s main arteries and internal routes clear, allowing snow-clearing machinery and emergency responders to operate without obstruction. Authorities have emphasized that these rules will be enforced without exception throughout the snowfall season.
Strict Traffic and Parking Regulations Introduced
Under the updated protocol, the administration has implemented a zero-tolerance parking ban across all major roads, including Mall Road and key internal routes. Vehicles parked illegally will be immediately impounded or sealed, with parking allowed only in officially designated commercial areas.
To further control congestion, vehicle entry into Murree will be actively monitored at all major access points, including the motorway, GT Road, and routes connecting Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Azad Jammu & Kashmir. Once the town reaches its safe vehicle capacity, temporary road closures will be enforced. Residents carrying valid identification will be exempt from these restrictions.
Enhanced Deployment and Mandatory Safety Measures
The administration has also increased the deployment of traffic police and civil defence volunteers across critical locations. Their role includes enforcing traffic discipline, preventing unauthorized lane changes, and ensuring compliance with road safety instructions.
Additionally, the use of metal snow chains has been made mandatory for vehicles traveling on snow-covered slopes. This measure is crucial for maintaining traction, preventing vehicle breakdowns, and reducing the risk of road blockages on steep inclines.
Life-Saving Safety Guidelines for Tourists
Tourists have been urged to exercise extreme caution, particularly to avoid the life-threatening risk of carbon monoxide poisoning. Authorities strictly advise:
- Do not use gas heaters inside vehicles
- If using a car heater, keep windows slightly open
- Do not sleep inside a stuck vehicle
Visitors are encouraged to travel in road-worthy vehicles, preferably 4×4, keep fuel tanks near-full, and carry emergency supplies, including warm blankets, extra clothing, water, and high-energy non-perishable food.
Emergency Contacts and Weather Updates
Tourists are advised to regularly monitor updates from the Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) and save the following emergency numbers:
- Rescue 1122: 1122
- Tourism Helpline: 1421
- District Administration Control Room: 051-9269015 / 051-9269016
Authorities stress that the success of the snowfall season depends on strict compliance, responsible tourism, and continuous vigilance, ensuring Murree remains safe and accessible for everyone.
