In a significant boost to national security, the National Highways and Motorway Police (NHMP) successfully foiled a major attempt to transport illegal weapons near Sial Mor on the M-2 Motorway. The operation, which unfolded during a routine traffic stop, highlights the vigilance and swift response of NHMP officers in preventing a potential threat to law and order.
Suspicious Behavior Triggers Police Action
According to an NHMP spokesperson, the operation began when officers flagged a car for overspeeding. Rather than complying, the driver attempted to flee, prompting a rapid response from the patrol unit. The officers successfully intercepted the fleeing vehicle shortly thereafter.
As the team approached, the suspects inside the car threatened officers with firearms and attempted to escape. However, the officers demonstrated exceptional professionalism and courage, managing to apprehend all suspects without any casualties.
Large Cache of Illegal Weapons Recovered
Upon searching the first car, NHMP personnel discovered a disturbing cache of weapons, including:
- 1 Sub-Machine Gun (SMG)
- 1 295mm rifle with 100 bullets
- 1 30-bore pistol with 42 bullets
Further investigation revealed that a second vehicle, believed to be associated with the suspects, was also traveling on the same route. Authorities promptly intercepted this vehicle and found:
- 3 SMGs
- 500 bullets
Both vehicles, along with the suspects and seized weapons, were handed over to the local police for further legal action and in-depth investigation.
A Triumph of Vigilance and Coordination
This successful operation underscores the critical role of NHMP in maintaining highway security and preventing the movement of illegal arms, which could have had severe implications for public safety.
Authorities have praised the swift response and professionalism of the NHMP officers involved, noting that such proactive measures are vital for curbing the spread of illegal arms and ensuring the safety of citizens traveling on Pakistan’s highways.
As investigations continue, this incident serves as a stark reminder of the ongoing threats to national security and the importance of routine highway checks in intercepting criminal activities.
