At a time when car buyers across Pakistan are bracing for yet another wave of price hikes, MG Motors has given its customers a much-needed sigh of relief. The company has announced that the MG HS Trophy will continue to be sold at its original price of Rs. 8,399,000, absorbing the newly introduced 2% New Energy Vehicle (NEV) Levy rather than passing it on to consumers.
In the federal budget 2025–26, the government imposed a 2% NEV Levy on all petrol and hybrid vehicles. This move aims to generate additional revenue while encouraging a gradual shift towards greener technologies. As expected, many car manufacturers have responded by increasing their vehicle prices, putting more pressure on consumers already dealing with inflation and rising fuel costs.
However, MG Motors has bucked this trend by announcing that it will bear the NEV Levy’s cost for its popular HS Trophy SUV — a decision that sets the company apart in a highly competitive market.
The MG HS Trophy, first launched in January 2025, initially attracted buyers with an introductory early bird discount. That offer officially expired at the end of June. Now, from July 1, the SUV is back at its launch ex-factory price of Rs. 8,399,000, despite the new tax burden.
MG’s move is being seen as a strategic step to maintain customer trust and competitiveness at a time when affordability is becoming a major concern for potential car buyers.
Interestingly, MG Motors is not alone in this approach. Haval Pakistan has also announced it will not pass on the 2% NEV Levy to customers, choosing instead to keep its vehicle prices unchanged. This has positioned both MG and Haval as buyer-friendly brands amid widespread price adjustments by other automakers.
The decision to absorb the NEV Levy comes as good news for SUV enthusiasts who are eyeing premium yet relatively affordable options. The MG HS Trophy, known for its modern design, advanced safety features, and fuel efficiency, remains a strong contender in Pakistan’s SUV segment.
With MG Motors and Haval standing out by shielding customers from immediate price shocks, industry watchers are curious to see if other brands will follow suit — or continue to increase prices in response to the NEV Levy.
For now, those considering the MG HS Trophy can still secure the popular SUV at its original price, without worrying about the added burden of the new tax — but how long this consumer-friendly move will last remains to be seen.
