Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz is expected to inaugurate Rawalpindi’s first-ever electric bus service later this month — a landmark initiative designed to modernize the city’s public transport and promote environmental sustainability. The announcement was made by Federal Minister for Railways Muhammad Hanif Abbasi during a meeting with members of the Rawalpindi Traders Association.

According to Abbasi, the introduction of electric buses will significantly enhance urban mobility by providing residents with a safe, affordable, and eco-friendly mode of transport. The project aims to benefit daily commuters — especially working professionals, women, and students — who depend on public transportation to travel within the city.

A Step Toward Sustainable Urban Mobility

The launch of the electric bus service in Rawalpindi aligns with the Punjab government’s broader vision to implement green and energy-efficient transport systems. This initiative supports Pakistan’s commitment to reducing carbon emissions and combating urban air pollution caused by conventional diesel-powered buses.

Abbasi emphasized that the project will not only improve air quality but also help reduce traffic congestion in the garrison city. “These buses will play a crucial role in ensuring cleaner, quieter, and more efficient mobility options for the people of Rawalpindi,” he stated.

The new electric bus system is expected to integrate with existing routes and infrastructure, complementing services like the Metro Bus and other major transit networks.

Government’s Broader Development Vision

The event was attended by Federal Parliamentary Secretary Barrister Daniyal Chaudhry, MPA Ziaullah Shah, Sardar Naseem, and representatives from the business community, reflecting strong political and community support for the initiative.

Highlighting recent infrastructure progress, Abbasi credited both federal and provincial leadership for successful projects including the Rawalpindi-Islamabad Metro Bus, establishment of technical training centers, and new educational institutions.

He also revealed that a Saudi delegation is scheduled to visit Pakistan soon to explore investment opportunities, showcasing growing international confidence in Pakistan’s economic and environmental policies.

A Cleaner, Smarter Future for Rawalpindi

The launch of Rawalpindi’s electric bus service under Maryam Nawaz’s leadership represents a major stride toward sustainable, efficient, and inclusive public transport. By prioritizing clean energy solutions and reducing dependence on fossil fuels, Punjab is setting a strong example for other provinces to follow in the transition toward a greener future.
