Islamabad authorities have announced a significant policy shift aimed at strengthening security and improving traffic management in the federal capital. Starting January 1, 2026, M-Tag will be mandatory for all vehicles entering Islamabad, regardless of their registration city or province.
The announcement was made by Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi during his visit to the Safe City Islamabad headquarters, where he highlighted the government’s vision of transforming Islamabad into a fully integrated “Capital Smart City.” According to the minister, the compulsory M-Tag system will play a central role in creating a safer, smarter, and more efficiently managed capital.
Why M-Tag Is Being Made Mandatory?
The mandatory use of M-Tags is part of a broader technology-driven reform agenda. Mohsin Naqvi instructed authorities to integrate traffic monitoring, security surveillance, emergency response services, and law enforcement into a single centralized system. This integration will allow real-time tracking, quicker response times, and improved coordination among departments.
Officials stated that the system has already proven effective during major events such as Muharram, where enhanced surveillance and digital monitoring helped ensure better security and traffic flow.
Who Needs an M-Tag?
The rule applies primarily to four-wheelers, including vehicles registered outside Islamabad. Authorities clarified that no additional M-Tag is required—drivers who already have one can continue using it without any changes.
According to the Deputy Commissioner Islamabad, more than 100,000 vehicles have been issued M-Tags since November, reflecting strong public participation and readiness for the upcoming deadline.
How and Where to Get an M-Tag?
To make the process easier for residents and visitors, Islamabad administration has established 16 M-Tag issuance points across the city. These centers operate daily and offer a quick and hassle-free registration process.
Drivers are required to bring:
- Original CNIC
- Vehicle registration documents
The issuance fee is approximately Rs. 250, making it an affordable requirement for vehicle owners.
A Step Toward a Smarter Capital
Authorities believe the mandatory M-Tag policy will significantly reduce traffic violations, enhance vehicle tracking, and strengthen city-wide surveillance. As Islamabad moves toward becoming a smart capital, officials urge drivers to get their M-Tags well before the deadline to avoid inconvenience.
With digital monitoring and centralized control systems expanding, the M-Tag initiative marks a major milestone in Islamabad’s urban and technological transformation.
