In a bold step toward modernizing urban mobility, the Traffic Engineering and Transport Planning Agency (Tepa) has launched a pilot project to install international-standard traffic signals and signage in Lahore, beginning with the high-traffic Faisal Chowk on The Mall.
As part of its vision to improve road safety and streamline traffic flow, Tepa aims to introduce smart traffic systems across the city. According to Tepa Chief Engineer Iqrar Hussain, civil work at Faisal Chowk has already been completed, and the final phase—installation of advanced signals and signage—is expected to wrap up within the coming week.
“We are now in the final stage of installing modern signals and signage,” said Hussain. “The equipment we are using is on par with systems deployed in the United States and Canada.”
This state-of-the-art traffic control system includes automated signals for both vehicles and pedestrians, designed to enhance road safety, reduce congestion, and lower the risk of accidents. In addition, road surface lights have been embedded to improve nighttime visibility and guide driver behavior at intersections.
Originally, the project proposed using conventional traffic signal systems. However, the plan was revised to integrate cutting-edge technology, reflecting a strategic shift in how Lahore addresses urban traffic challenges.
The Faisal Chowk smart signal pilot is seen as a model for future upgrades. If proven successful, Tepa plans to roll out similar systems at other critical intersections throughout Lahore. This initiative supports the city’s broader goals of becoming a smart city, focusing on sustainable transport, safety, and efficient urban planning.
As traffic continues to surge in major Pakistani cities, Lahore’s traffic signal modernization offers a scalable solution. The introduction of international-grade signals and signage marks a turning point in how the city plans to manage its growing mobility demands—placing pedestrian safety, intelligent control, and real-time traffic management at the forefront.
