In a landmark move to modernize Lahore’s public transportation system, the Punjab government has approved a comprehensive renovation plan for the Lahore Metro Bus Service, allocating over Rs 5 billion for the initiative. The plan focuses on infrastructure upgrades, solar power integration, and enhanced passenger facilities to rejuvenate the aging system and meet modern standards.

Massive Budget Breakdown: Stations, Solar Power, and Track Repairs

According to official reports cited by City42, the renovation plan includes:

  • Rs 2.105 billion for the repair and refurbishment of 25 metro bus stations across Lahore.
  • Rs 1.7 billion allocated to install solar energy systems at all metro stations to reduce the service’s dependence on conventional electricity.
  • Rs 1.5 billion earmarked for the restoration of the existing metro track, which has seen wear and tear over the years due to inadequate maintenance.

Enhancing Passenger Experience and Accessibility

The plan goes beyond basic repairs. It includes a revamp of pedestrian bridges, modernized ticket counters, and upgrades to station platforms. These changes aim to improve accessibility for people with disabilities and enhance the overall commuter experience with better design and visual appeal.

The renovation plan is based on a detailed engineering inspection and cost analysis conducted by NESPAK (National Engineering Services Pakistan) under the directives of the Chief Minister.

Speaking about the initiative, the Punjab Transport Minister criticized the previous administration’s neglect of the metro system, which had led to significant service degradation. “We are taking corrective steps to ensure Lahore’s metro system reflects the quality standards it was originally intended to offer,” he said.

Transitioning to Electric Buses for a Greener Future

In a significant step towards sustainable urban mobility, the minister also announced that all metro buses will gradually be converted to electric vehicles. This move aligns with global sustainability trends and Pakistan’s broader climate goals by reducing emissions and operational costs over time.
