Lahore’s Free Emission Testing Service Ends June 30: Paid Testing to Start at Authorized Dealerships

The free Emission Testing System (ETS) in Lahore—launched to combat rising air pollution—will officially conclude on June 30, 2025, as announced by the Environment Protection and Climate Change Department. In a strategic move, the Punjab government will outsource ETS services to private car dealerships, ushering in a paid testing model aimed at enhancing accessibility and system efficiency.

According to Secretary Raja Jahangir Anwar, the new plan involves equipping all authorized dealerships of vehicle manufacturers in Lahore with ETS machines and trained staff. These centers will offer emission testing for Rs. 400 per vehicle, replacing the previous free service model. The shift is expected to increase the number of vehicles tested by expanding the service’s reach.

Why the Change in ETS Strategy?

Originally, ETS operated through 20 free testing centers scattered across Lahore. Each location typically had three squads, but the growing number of vehicles led to long queues and service delays. These operational bottlenecks prompted the government to seek a more scalable and sustainable model.

By involving private sector dealerships, the department aims to:

  • Expand ETS capacity across Lahore
  • Improve convenience for vehicle owners
  • Ensure better compliance with environmental standards
  • Streamline enforcement once enough vehicles have been tested

Raja Jahangir emphasized that the transition is part of a broader environmental protection strategy, ensuring that vehicle emissions are kept in check to reduce smog and air pollution levels in the city.

What Vehicle Owners Need to Know?

  • Deadline for Free ETS: June 30, 2025
  • New Testing Centers: Authorized dealerships of car brands
  • Test Fee: Rs. 400 per vehicle
  • ETS Equipment: Certified machines with trained staff
  • Goal: Increase tested vehicles and reduce urban air pollution

A Step Toward Cleaner Air in Lahore

The Lahore emission testing service 2025 marks a critical step toward addressing air quality challenges in the city. By modernizing and decentralizing the testing process, the government is creating a more efficient system that aligns with global best practices in urban emissions control.

Petrol and diesel prices in Pakistan are likely to rise again from July 16, with petrol expected to increase by Rs. 5.25 per litre and high-speed diesel by Rs. 6.50 per litre. This fresh hike will directly impact transport costs and household budgets, especially for middle- and low-income families who rely on petrol for daily commuting. Meanwhile, slight drops in kerosene and light diesel oil prices may offer limited relief.
