In a major step toward sustainable urban development, the Punjab government is set to establish Electric Vehicle (EV) Charging Stations across Lahore, accommodating up to 1,100 electric vehicles in the first phase of the project. This ambitious initiative underscores the province’s commitment to eco-friendly transportation and reduced carbon emissions.

A recent high-level meeting chaired by Senior Member Board of Revenue (SMBR) Nabeel Javed brought together key stakeholders to develop a roadmap for the initiative. Attendees included the Secretary Transport, Member Colonies, Deputy Commissioner Lahore, and other senior officials.

Strategic Planning for Charging Infrastructure Begins

The primary objective of the meeting was to finalize plans for installing EV charging stations at strategic locations throughout the city. SMBR Nabeel Javed directed authorities to immediately identify high-traffic zones and accessible public spaces for establishing the charging facilities.

Both small-scale and high-capacity charging hubs will be developed to cater to different segments of the EV population. The city administration was also advised to conduct comprehensive surveys of major public and private parking areas to determine optimal sites for the infrastructure.

Public-Private Collaboration for Greater Reach

To maximize impact and accessibility, the government will explore collaboration with private parking operators and transport companies. This public-private partnership model aims to broaden the network of charging stations and support a seamless transition to electric mobility across Lahore.

Land allocation for the project will be fast-tracked, with swift approval processes to avoid delays. A detailed plan of action will be developed in coordination with all concerned departments to ensure effective implementation.

Environmental and Economic Benefits for the City

SMBR Nabeel Javed emphasized that the development of EV charging stations is not just a technological upgrade but a milestone in Lahore’s urban modernization. By promoting the use of electric vehicles, the project is expected to curb air pollution, reduce reliance on fossil fuels, and improve public health.

This initiative also aligns with Pakistan’s broader sustainability and climate goals, contributing to a cleaner, greener future. With Lahore being one of the most densely populated cities in the country, the adoption of EV infrastructure will play a crucial role in shaping its environmental and economic landscape.

The Punjab government’s decision to install EV charging stations for 1,100 vehicles in Lahore marks a visionary step toward sustainable transport. Through rapid execution, public-private collaboration, and a focus on environmental well-being, Lahore is positioning itself as a leading green city in Pakistan.
