Following the successful deployment of electric buses in Punjab, Lahore is preparing to launch its first electric tram service to provide citizens with a modern, sustainable, and eco-friendly travel option.
According to officials, the tram will operate along a dedicated route from Harbanspura to Thokar Niaz Baig under an urban transport initiative designed to reduce congestion and improve air quality.
Route Design and Traffic Management
To ensure smooth operations, planners have proposed several infrastructure adjustments:
- Underpasses along Canal Road will be reconfigured into a single lane for streamlined traffic flow.
- The Jail Road underpass will be shifted from the left to the right side of the roadway.
- The tram line will run on the far-left side of Canal Road to minimize disruption to existing vehicle lanes.
- Road width near bus stops will be expanded to facilitate passenger boarding and alighting without slowing mainline traffic.
Future Expansion Plans
The Punjab Transport Department is evaluating operational details to ensure the tram system’s long-term viability. Additionally, discussions are underway to construct an underground route from Jallo to Harbanspura, which would further strengthen Lahore’s public transport network and integrate with future mass transit projects.
A Step Towards Sustainable Urban Mobility
The electric tram initiative aligns with Punjab’s broader vision of eco-friendly transportation, reduced vehicular emissions, and improved public transit efficiency. By providing a clean-energy alternative along one of Lahore’s busiest corridors, the project aims to ease congestion, cut travel time, and encourage more citizens to choose public transport over private vehicles.
With construction and planning phases moving forward, Lahore’s electric tram service could become a model for sustainable urban mobility in other Pakistani cities.
