Lahore is making significant strides in sustainable urban mobility as 35 additional electric buses are set to arrive in the city next month. The expansion aims to strengthen the city’s eco-friendly public transport network and provide commuters with a cleaner, more efficient alternative to traditional vehicles.
New Route: Canal Road Corridor
According to an official spokesperson, the newly inducted electric buses will operate along the Canal Road corridor, covering the route from Thokar Niaz Baig to Jallo Mor. The buses are scheduled to arrive in the coming week, with formal operations expected to begin in the first week of October.
A special launch ceremony will also be held to mark the inauguration of the expanded service on this new corridor.
Current Fleet and Expansion
At present, 27 electric buses are already serving passengers on the route between Green Town and the Railway Station. With the new induction, Lahore’s total electric fleet will exceed 60 buses, making it one of the largest electric public transport operations in Pakistan.
Benefits for Citizens
The expansion is expected to bring multiple benefits:
- Improved accessibility for daily commuters across key urban routes.
- Reduced traffic congestion, particularly along Canal Road.
- Lower carbon emissions, contributing to a cleaner and greener city.
- Cost-effective travel, providing relief to citizens amid rising fuel costs.
Towards a Greener Future
The addition of these 35 buses highlights the government’s commitment to building a sustainable transport system in Lahore. With growing concerns over pollution and climate change, the move underscores the importance of shifting towards electric mobility for Pakistan’s urban centers.
