The Punjab government has taken a significant step toward sustainable urban mobility by introducing an electric bus service in Lahore. Chief Minister Punjab, Maryam Nawaz, officially launched the pilot project, marking a new era in eco-friendly public transportation.

Expansion Plans and Fleet Details

Currently, the service operates with 27 electric buses along a 21-kilometer route, covering major areas such as Lahore Railway Station, Queens Road, Mozang, Ferozepur Road, Campus Bridge, and Ichhra Canal. However, in August 2025, the fleet is set to expand with 500 additional e-buses, significantly enhancing the city’s transport infrastructure.

Each bus is equipped with a 350 kWh battery, and while a 200 kWh charger takes three hours for a full charge, a DC fast charger in Green Town can charge a bus in just 30 minutes. With a range of 300 kilometers, these buses are well-suited to cover their 250-kilometer routes efficiently.

Affordable and Inclusive Public Transport

The government has made affordability a priority, setting the fare at Rs. 20, ensuring accessibility for all commuters. In a commendable initiative, senior citizens, differently-abled individuals, and students can travel free of charge on e-buses, the Orange Line Train, and Speedo buses.

CM Maryam Nawaz emphasized the importance of keeping transportation affordable, stating, “I am most happy that the electric bus fare has been fixed at Rs. 20. Public transport costs can be a burden on people, and this initiative aims to ease their commute.”

Modern Facilities for a Comfortable Journey

To enhance passenger experience and security, these e-buses are equipped with free Wi-Fi, mobile charging ports, and CCTV cameras to ensure safety, particularly for women and other vulnerable commuters.

Comprehensive Route Coverage

The e-bus service covers a vast network of key landmarks and busy commercial areas, ensuring connectivity across the city. The route includes:

  • Haji Camp, Police Line, Shimla Pahari, Roznama Jang, Muslim League House, Club Chowk.
  • Governor House, Bagh-e-Jinnah, Charing Cross, Gangaram Hospital, Abid Market, Mozang.
  • Ichhra, Punjab College, New Garden Town, Punjab University, Ravi Chowk, Akbar Chowk, Township Bazaar.
  • Model Town Link Road, Riphah University, Hamdard Chowk, Minhaj University.

With buses arriving every nine minutes, approximately 17,000 passengers benefit from the service daily.

Towards a Greener Future

The e-buses, provided by Yutong Master Motor, mark an important shift towards reducing carbon emissions and promoting clean energy solutions. The Punjab government is already working on expanding the service to additional routes, reinforcing its commitment to sustainable urban transport.

The launch of Lahore’s first electric bus service is a step forward in modernizing public transport, reducing pollution, and making commuting more convenient and affordable. What are your thoughts on this initiative? Let us know in the comments!
