In a major step toward sustainable urban mobility, the Chief Minister (CM) of Punjab has inaugurated Phase II of the Lahore Electric Bus Project, introducing 40 new electric buses and two additional routes to the city’s growing green transport network.
The newly added routes are:
- Route 1: Raiwind → Jinnah Terminal (Thokar Niaz Baig)
- Route 2: Jinnah Terminal (Thokar Niaz Baig) → Harbanspura
Speaking at the inauguration ceremony, the CM announced that 70 more electric buses will join the fleet by December 2025, bringing the total number of eco-friendly buses in the Lahore Division to 500.
Affordable and Inclusive Travel for All
The CM emphasized that the Lahore Electric Bus Service is designed to provide affordable, efficient, and inclusive public transport to all residents. The fare is set at just Rs. 20, making it one of the most economical options in the region. Furthermore, students, senior citizens, and people with disabilities can travel free of cost, ensuring accessibility for all segments of society.
Modern Facilities and Passenger Comfort
Each electric bus is equipped with state-of-the-art features to enhance passenger experience. These include:
- Free Wi-Fi connectivity
- CCTV surveillance for safety
- Mobile charging ports
- Wheelchair access ramps for differently-abled passengers
These modern additions set what the CM described as “a new standard in public service and urban transport excellence.”
Expanding the Electric Bus Network Across Punjab
The CM also announced plans to extend the electric bus network to other major cities in Punjab, including Nankana Sahib, Kasur, and Sheikhupura. This expansion builds on the successful implementation of electric bus services in Mianwali, Wazirabad, Sargodha, and Sahiwal, where passenger turnout has exceeded expectations.
The government’s vision is to make green mobility a cornerstone of Punjab’s transport policy, reducing air pollution, easing traffic congestion, and promoting energy-efficient travel.
A Milestone for Sustainable Urban Transport
With Phase II of the Lahore Electric Bus Project, Punjab is setting a benchmark for sustainable, inclusive, and technology-driven public transport. The initiative not only supports Pakistan’s environmental goals but also strengthens the province’s commitment to modern infrastructure and climate-friendly mobility.
As Lahore moves toward a cleaner, smarter transport future, this expansion serves as a model for cities across Pakistan, reflecting the province’s dedication to innovation and environmental stewardship.
