A high-level meeting on Monday reviewed the proposed Lahore Elevated Expressway project, which is being designed to tackle growing traffic congestion while promoting environmentally friendly urban transport.
The project envisions a four-lane elevated expressway running from Gulberg to Babu Sabu along Lahore’s main stormwater drain. Once completed, it is expected to serve more than 70,000 passengers daily, providing significant relief to commuters who face long delays on the city’s busiest routes.
Travel Time Cut to 10 Minutes
Officials stated that the new expressway will dramatically reduce travel time between Gulberg Main Boulevard and Motorway M-2 to just 10 minutes. To improve connectivity, the plan includes the construction of six major interchanges, with additional links to integrate the route with the Metro Bus Service and the Orange Line Metro Train, enabling direct benefits for public transport users.
Eco-Friendly and Green Transport Policy
Authorities emphasized that the project is designed not only to ease traffic pressure but also to reduce carbon emissions, making it a vital part of the government’s broader eco-friendly infrastructure policies. By diverting heavy traffic flow and creating smoother routes, the expressway is expected to contribute to improved air quality in Lahore.
Broader Urban Planning Measures
The meeting, chaired by Secretary Housing Noor ul Amin Mengal, also discussed plans to:
- Relocate major city markets outside Lahore’s congested urban core.
- Allocate land near the motorway for a new bus terminal connected to the expressway.
- Establish the Lahore Traffic Decongestion Committee to oversee planning and execution.
Additionally, a comprehensive Environmental Impact Study (EIS) will be carried out before the project is formally approved and presented to Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif. Senior representatives from LDA, WASA Punjab, Nespak, and other government departments attended the session.
A Step Toward Smarter, Greener Mobility
If approved, the Lahore Elevated Expressway project could transform the city’s transport landscape by offering faster, safer, and greener travel options. With integration into existing public transit networks, the project highlights Lahore’s move toward modern, sustainable urban infrastructure.
