Drawing inspiration from her recent visit to China, the initiative seeks to improve road safety for one of the most vulnerable groups of road users: motorcyclists.
A Global Inspiration for a Local Solution
The concept for the diamond lanes was sparked by the Chief Minister’s observations in Chinese cities like Nanjing and Zhanjiang, where designated motorcycle lanes are separated from main roads. These lanes have been credited with significantly reducing road accidents and enhancing rider safety. The idea is to replicate this successful model in Lahore, where motorcycles are a vital mode of transport for many citizens.
Prioritizing Motorcyclist Safety
During a recent cabinet meeting, the Chief Minister discussed the initiative and assigned Senior Minister Maryam Aurangzeb to oversee its implementation. Highlighting the alarming statistics surrounding motorcyclist fatalities and disabilities, particularly due to head injuries, Maryam Nawaz emphasized the importance of safeguarding those who rely on motorcycles for their daily commutes.
“Ensuring the safety of motorcyclists is a priority,” she stated, underscoring the necessity of innovative measures to protect vulnerable road users.
Pilot Phase on Ferozepur Road
The first phase of this initiative will see the introduction of diamond lanes on Ferozepur Road, one of the busiest roads in Lahore. Senior officials, including the Director General of the Lahore Development Authority (LDA) and Chief Traffic Officer (CTO) Athar Waheed, have already inspected potential sites and identified three-lane roads as suitable for the project.
Collaboration for Effective Implementation
To ensure the smooth implementation of the project, specialized traffic police teams have been formed to work closely with the LDA and the Traffic Engineering and Planning Agency (TEPA). Together, they will prepare a detailed feasibility study for the diamond lanes and ensure their efficient operation.
The lanes will be reserved exclusively for motorcyclists, with strict penalties for other vehicles that encroach on them. This will ensure that the initiative meets its objective of improving safety without disrupting traffic flow.
Awareness Campaigns and Future Expansion
In addition to the physical infrastructure, awareness campaigns will be launched to educate motorcyclists about the benefits of the diamond lanes and encourage compliance.
