The Government of Punjab has announced a major step toward modernizing urban transportation with the launch of the Lahore Blue Line Metro Project, Pakistan’s first fully underground metro train system. The project aims to significantly improve commuting within the provincial capital while addressing growing traffic congestion and urban mobility challenges.
The proposed metro line will stretch approximately 27 kilometers, connecting Valencia Town to Babu Sabu Chowk, two important areas of the city. Once completed, the system is expected to transport over 250,000 passengers daily, making it one of the most significant public transport developments in the country.
Fully Underground Route Across Major Areas
According to government sources, the Blue Line Metro will run entirely underground and include several stations in some of Lahore’s busiest residential and commercial districts. Planned underground stations will be located in areas such as Johar Town, Faisal Town, Garden Town, Kalma Chowk, Gulberg, Jail Road, Ferozepur Road, Wahdat Road, and Allama Iqbal Town.
The project represents a major upgrade compared to earlier proposals. Initial studies had suggested that only about 12 kilometers of the route would be underground. However, authorities have now decided to make the entire Blue Line route underground to reduce surface traffic disruption and preserve the city’s urban landscape.
Government Directives and Project Timeline
Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif has directed the provincial transport authorities to fast-track the feasibility study and design phase. Once the feasibility report is finalized, it will outline key aspects such as project cost, financing structure, and the construction timeline.
Officials estimate that the project will cost more than Rs600 billion, making it one of the most expensive infrastructure projects in Pakistan’s transport sector. Advanced tunneling machines are expected to be used during construction, capable of digging approximately six meters per day.
Authorities aim to complete the project within three years, provided funding and approvals proceed smoothly.
International Interest in Funding
The Lahore Blue Line Metro has already attracted interest from international financial institutions and development partners. Sources indicate that organizations from China, Japan, and France have shown interest in financing the project.
Earlier feasibility studies were conducted by the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) and Turkish consultants in 2016. A fresh transport study was also carried out in June 2024 to update demand forecasts and technical requirements.
Boost for Lahore’s Urban Transport
The Blue Line Metro is expected to play a crucial role in easing daily commuting for millions of residents in Lahore. With rapid population growth and increasing vehicle numbers, Lahore faces serious traffic congestion and environmental challenges.
By introducing Pakistan’s first fully underground metro system, the Punjab government aims to provide fast, efficient, and environmentally friendly public transportation. The project is also expected to complement existing mass transit systems such as the Lahore Metrobus and the Orange Line Metro Train.
If approved in the 2026–27 federal and provincial development budgets, the project’s PC-I approval and initial funding will mark the beginning of construction. Once completed, the Blue Line Metro could transform Lahore’s transportation network and set a new benchmark for urban transit in Pakistan.
