By The Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) government has taken a major step toward improving regional connectivity by initiating preparations for the extension of the Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) service to Jamrud and Bara in Khyber district. Chief Minister Mohammad Sohail Afridi, while chairing a high-level meeting on the proposed expansion, directed authorities to complete all preparatory work at the earliest to ensure timely execution of the project.
Improved Connectivity Between Peshawar and Khyber
According to the chief minister, the BRT extension will significantly enhance daily commuting between Peshawar and Khyber district, providing residents with a safe, reliable, and affordable public transport option. The project is expected to benefit students, office workers, and traders who frequently travel between these areas.
CM Afridi emphasized that improved public transport infrastructure will not only save travel time but also help reduce traffic congestion on busy routes. Additionally, the expansion aligns with the government’s broader goal of minimizing environmental pollution by encouraging mass transit instead of private vehicles.
Infrastructure Development and Cost Estimates
Officials briefed the meeting that a dedicated BRT ramp will be constructed at the Karkhano station, with an estimated cost of Rs. 500 million. This ramp will ensure smooth integration of the new routes with the existing BRT network and help maintain operational efficiency.
To facilitate operations on the extended routes, the transport department will procure 12 new 12-meter-long buses. Authorities also plan to establish eight bus stops along a five-kilometer stretch from Karkhano Market to Jamrud Bazaar, making the service accessible to a large population.
In addition, 10 new bus stops will be developed along a seven-kilometer route from Pishtakhara to Bara Bazaar, further expanding coverage in the Khyber district.
Expansion of the BRT Fleet
The meeting was informed that the existing BRT system currently operates 18 routes covering 132 kilometers across Peshawar. To strengthen the fleet, the provincial government plans to add 52 diesel-hybrid buses at a cost of Rs. 3.2 billion and 50 electric buses costing Rs. 6.2 billion by June 2026. This investment reflects KP’s commitment to sustainable and environmentally friendly transport solutions.
A Step Toward Sustainable Urban Mobility
Senior provincial officials, including the chief secretary and transport department representatives, attended the meeting and reaffirmed their support for the project. Once completed, the BRT extension to Jamrud and Bara is expected to transform public transport in the region, improve mobility, and contribute to economic and social development in Khyber district.
