By In a major boost to Karachi’s transport infrastructure, Sindh Chief Minister Syed Murad Ali Shah on Monday inaugurated the Korangi Causeway Bridge, a landmark project costing Rs. 6.1 billion. The newly completed bridge is expected to significantly ease traffic congestion and improve access between Karachi’s key industrial and residential zones.
Spanning 1.4 kilometers over the Malir River, the Korangi Causeway Bridge connects the Korangi Industrial Area with Karachi’s East and South districts. Designed as a six-lane corridor with three lanes on each side, the bridge is projected to serve nearly five million commuters daily, making it one of the city’s most critical transport links.
Ending Rain-Related Disruptions
Addressing the inauguration ceremony, Chief Minister Murad Ali Shah highlighted that the area had long suffered from accessibility issues, especially during the monsoon season. Heavy rainfall often submerged routes across the Malir River, cutting off Korangi and Landhi from the rest of the city and severely disrupting daily life and commercial activity.
He noted that the project was approved nearly three years ago specifically to address these long-standing challenges. With the bridge now operational, uninterrupted connectivity is expected even during adverse weather conditions.
Boost for Industrial and Economic Activity
The Korangi and Landhi industrial zones are among Karachi’s most important economic hubs, housing thousands of factories and employing a large workforce. The new bridge will reduce travel time for workers, transporters, and businesses, while also improving logistics efficiency and emergency response times.
Accompanying the chief minister at the event were Sindh Local Government Minister Syed Nasir Shah, Labour Minister Saeed Ghani, Karachi Mayor Murtaza Wahab, and other senior officials. Special Assistant Ali Rashid and Local Government Secretary Waseem Shamshad received the delegation at the project site.
Part of Karachi’s Wider Infrastructure Revival
The Korangi Causeway Bridge is part of a broader strategy to restore and modernize Karachi’s infrastructure. The chief minister confirmed that additional development work is ongoing, including the much-anticipated connection of Shahrah-i-Bhutto with Korangi Road.
According to officials, Shahrah-i-Bhutto is expected to open by Eid or shortly afterward, initially linking Korangi Road to the M-9 Motorway, a move that will further streamline intercity and intracity travel.
With projects like the Korangi Causeway Bridge nearing completion, Karachi is gradually witnessing long-awaited improvements in urban mobility, resilience, and economic connectivity.
