KMC to Establish Electric Bike Charging Stations Across Karachi

The Karachi Metropolitan Corporation (KMC) has taken a major step toward sustainable mobility by announcing the installation of electric bike charging stations in Karachi. Mayor Murtaza Wahab stated that the initiative is aimed at reducing rising fuel expenses, cutting carbon emissions, and promoting eco-friendly transportation for the city’s workforce.

First Phase: 20 Electric Bikes for Employees

In collaboration with a private company, KMC has launched the first phase of the project. Under this arrangement, employees will be provided with electric bikes for daily use, encouraging greener commuting solutions.

The corporation has acquired 20 electric bikes in the initial phase. While the market price of each unit is around Rs. 240,000, KMC managed to purchase them at a reduced cost of Rs. 215,000 through a negotiated deal. According to Mayor Wahab, the first batch will be handed over to dispatch riders, while the next phase will prioritize women employees, promoting inclusivity and gender-friendly transport options.

Charging Stations to Be Installed Across Karachi

To support the initiative, KMC has already installed its first electric bike charging station at the corporation’s headquarters. Additional charging points will soon be established across Karachi to ensure convenient access for employees.

These charging stations will be monitored through a mobile application, ensuring transparency, efficiency, and accountability in their operation. This digital integration will also help track usage and improve service delivery.

A Step Toward Sustainable Urban Transport

The launch of Karachi electric bike charging stations is a progressive move toward sustainable urban mobility. With fuel prices and environmental concerns on the rise, KMC’s initiative reflects a broader vision of reducing the city’s carbon footprint while promoting modern, eco-conscious commuting.

This project is expected to set a benchmark for other cities in Pakistan, paving the way for cleaner, smarter, and more sustainable transport solutions in the future.
