By Fresh rainfall and snowfall in northern Pakistan have caused major disruptions along the Karakoram Highway, after landslides blocked several sections of the road between Diamer District and Kohistan District. Thousands of passengers traveling between Gilgit-Baltistan and other parts of the country were left stranded due to the closures.
Landslides Block Key Highway Sections
According to local authorities, landslides occurred at multiple locations on Tuesday after continuous rain and snowfall across the mountainous region. The debris blocked the highway at several points from Barseen to Pattan, making the route impassable.
Officials from Diamer Police said thousands of travelers had to spend the night on the road after traffic came to a halt. Among those stranded were patients, elderly passengers, and families with children who were unable to continue their journeys due to the blocked road.
The Attaur Rehman Kakar confirmed that the highway has been closed at multiple locations in both Upper and Lower Kohistan because of landslide debris.
Rescue and Clearance Efforts Planned
Authorities stated that debris removal operations will begin once weather conditions improve. The Frontier Works Organisation (FWO) has been assigned to carry out the clearance work and reopen the affected sections of the highway.
The Karakoram Highway is considered one of Pakistan’s most important routes as it connects northern regions with the rest of the country and serves as a major corridor linking Pakistan with China. Any disruption on the highway can significantly affect passenger travel, trade, and supply chains.

Local officials have advised travelers to avoid unnecessary journeys toward northern areas until the weather stabilizes and the Karakoram Highway is fully cleared. Emergency teams remain on alert, while authorities continue monitoring the situation closely.
Once debris removal begins, officials expect gradual restoration of traffic on the affected sections of the highway, allowing stranded passengers to resume their journeys.
