Karachi has taken a significant step towards solving its chronic parking and traffic woes in the city’s busiest commercial area. On Sunday, City Mayor Barrister Murtaza Wahab inaugurated the much-awaited Karachi Vertical Parking Plaza at Bolton Market, a project that was delayed for nearly five decades due to legal disputes and political roadblocks.

Developed by the Karachi Metropolitan Corporation (KMC), the vertical parking plaza can accommodate over 200 cars and 250 motorcycles, offering much-needed relief in an area notorious for severe traffic jams and limited parking space.

A Vision Revived After Nearly Half a Century

Speaking at the inauguration ceremony, Mayor Wahab shared the project’s long and complicated history. He highlighted that the original plan for a parking facility at Bolton Market dates back to the government of Zulfikar Ali Bhutto in the 1970s. However, the plan was shelved during General Zia-ul-Haq’s era and faced numerous legal and political hurdles over the decades.

After 49 years, we are finally opening this facility to the public,” Wahab said, emphasizing that fear of legal challenges and investigations must not hold back important development decisions. He stressed that when Bolton Market prospers, it positively impacts Karachi’s economy and contributes to Pakistan’s overall growth.

A Boost for Karachi’s Commercial Hub

The inauguration ceremony was attended by Deputy Mayor Salman Abdullah Murad and other senior city officials. The new vertical parking plaza is expected to ease congestion, improve traffic flow, and attract more shoppers and businesses to Bolton Market — one of Karachi’s most vibrant and historic trading centers.

Mayor Wahab reiterated his commitment to the city’s progress under the Pakistan Peoples Party’s (PPP) leadership and vision. He assured citizens that similar development projects would continue to address Karachi’s long-standing urban challenges.

Karachi Vertical Parking Plaza: A Step Forward

The opening of the Karachi Vertical Parking Plaza demonstrates the city administration’s determination to tackle urban congestion with smart, space-saving solutions. With parking space for hundreds of vehicles, the facility promises to free up roads, reduce illegal parking, and make shopping trips to Bolton Market more convenient for traders and customers alike.

After nearly five decades in limbo, the Karachi Vertical Parking Plaza is finally a reality — a symbol of the city’s resilience and need for modern urban infrastructure. As Karachi continues to grow, such projects are crucial for easing traffic pressure and supporting economic activity in Pakistan’s largest city.
