The Karachi Traffic Police have officially implemented new speed limits on all major roads in the city, as part of a broader initiative to improve road safety, reduce accidents, and modernize traffic enforcement.
According to Deputy Inspector General (DIG) Traffic Pir Muhammad Shah, motorcycles and light transport vehicles (LTVs) will now be limited to a maximum speed of 60 kilometres per hour, while heavy transport vehicles (HTVs) will be restricted to 30 kilometres per hour.
Citywide Speed Monitoring Cameras Installed
DIG Shah confirmed that speed-monitoring systems equipped with cameras are being installed across Karachi to track and record vehicle speeds in real time. The move is part of a citywide rollout of the Traffic Regulation and Citation System (TRACS) — an advanced digital system for monitoring, recording, and penalizing traffic violations.
Currently, TRACS is operational in 40% of Karachi, with 1,717 cameras already integrated into the system. The network is fully functional in District South, with major arteries such as Shahrah-e-Faisal now covered by surveillance and automated violation detection.
E-Challans and Enforcement in Multiple Districts
The new system allows for automatic e-challans to be issued in Malir, Korangi, East, Keamari, and Central districts for offenses such as:
- Overspeeding
- Signal violations
- Wrong-way driving
- Failure to wear helmets
- Not fastening seat belts
Additionally, trackers are being installed in 10,000 heavy vehicles, directly linked to TRACS for real-time monitoring and data collection.
Future Expansion and Smart Traffic Goals
DIG Shah announced that the smart monitoring system will soon expand to industrial zones, including SITE, Landhi, New Karachi, and Korangi. These areas will receive camera-based surveillance, speed detection systems, and TRACS connectivity to manage heavy traffic more effectively.
“Karachi’s Traffic Management System will be fully implemented by next year,” said DIG Shah.
“An additional 11,000 cameras will be installed starting January 2026 to ensure complete citywide coverage.”
The initiative marks a major step toward digital transformation in Karachi’s traffic management, helping reduce road accidents, improve law enforcement, and create a safer driving environment for all.
