By Karachi authorities have introduced a revised traffic management plan to accommodate the ongoing construction work under the K-4 water supply project, part of the Karachi Water and Sewerage System Improvement Project (KWSSIP). The initiative aims to ensure a stable and long-term water supply solution for the metropolis while minimizing disruption to daily commuters.
Road Closure and Traffic Diversions
According to the traffic police, University Road will remain partially closed from November 10 to December 30, 2025, as work continues on installing large-diameter water pipelines. The closure will affect the stretch between NIPA Chowrangi and Federal Urdu University, where the first phase of construction is already underway.
Traffic from NIPA Chowrangi will be diverted toward Aladin Park, while the service lane between Aziz Bhatti Park and Federal Urdu University will remain closed to facilitate heavy machinery and construction crews. Vehicles traveling from Sir Syed University are being redirected to Ghaziabad Road, while the route from Safari Park to Hasan Square remains open to help ease congestion.
Project Details and Timeline
Officials from KWSSIP confirmed that the first phase of the project spans 2.7 kilometers between NIPA Chowrangi and Federal Urdu University, while the second phase will cover the stretch from Hasan Square to NIPA Chowrangi. The construction involves installing 96-inch and 72-inch diameter pipelines, which form part of Karachi’s long-awaited K-4 water project — a crucial infrastructure upgrade aimed at improving water distribution across the city.
Authorities have set a completion target of December 30, after which normal traffic flow is expected to resume.
Advisory for Commuters
Karachi Traffic Police have advised motorists to plan their routes in advance and allow extra travel time due to possible congestion around University Road, NIPA Chowrangi, and Gulshan-e-Iqbal. Traffic wardens will be deployed across diversion points to assist and manage vehicle flow.
Officials have also urged citizens to cooperate with ongoing construction efforts, emphasizing that the temporary inconvenience will contribute to significant long-term benefits, particularly in addressing Karachi’s chronic water shortage.
