As Karachi prepares for the observance of Muharram, the city’s traffic management authorities have announced a detailed traffic diversion plan and temporary suspension of key public transport services to ensure security and smooth flow of processions.

A spokesperson for the Karachi Traffic Police confirmed that the Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) Green Line operations will remain suspended on the 8th, 9th, and 10th of Muharram due to heightened security measures. The decision aims to minimize traffic congestion and maintain safety in areas where large religious gatherings and processions are expected.

Major Disruptions in Peoples Bus Service

In addition to the BRT suspension, significant changes have also been announced for the Peoples Bus Service. According to official details:

  • On the 8th of Muharram, five routes of the Peoples Bus Service will face partial suspension.
  • On the 9th and 10th of Muharram, seven out of ten major Peoples Bus Service routes will stay non-operational.

This move is part of the city administration’s efforts to secure procession routes and ensure public safety during one of the most sensitive periods of the Islamic calendar.

Elaborate Traffic Diversion Plan Announced

To help commuters navigate the city during these days, Karachi Traffic Police has issued a detailed traffic diversion plan. As per the plan:

  • MA Jinnah Road, one of Karachi’s busiest arteries, will remain closed between Guru Mandir and Tower for all types of traffic to accommodate processions safely.
  • Alternative routes have been shared to help citizens reach their destinations with minimum hassle.

Suggested Alternate Routes for Commuters

  • From Nazimabad: Take Lasbela Chowk via Garden area to reach Nishtar Park.
  • From Liaquatabad: Turn right at Teen Hatti, then proceed via Martin Road.
  • From Hassan Square to PP Chowrangi: Use Kashmir Road beneath Jail Flyover towards Society Light Signal (Shahrah-e-Quaideen) or use Jail Flyover to reach Teen Hatti and Nishtar Road through Lasbela Chowk.

The Karachi Traffic Police has urged citizens to strictly follow these routes, cooperate with traffic wardens, and avoid unnecessary travel near procession routes during the key days of Muharram.

Citizens Advised to Plan Ahead

With major bus services partially or fully suspended and key city roads closed, Karachiites are strongly advised to plan their travel in advance, use alternative routes, or opt for ride-sharing services where possible.

Every year, large processions and gatherings in the city lead to significant road closures, so the cooperation of the public is essential to ensure smooth traffic flow and public safety.
