Karachi Tightens Traffic Rules: Rs. 20,000 Fine for Driving Without a License

The Deputy Inspector General (DIG) of Traffic Police Karachi has issued a strong reminder to citizens to ensure they possess valid driving licenses as part of the city’s intensified traffic enforcement campaign. In the latest move to promote safer roads and responsible driving, the traffic department has announced a Rs. 20,000 fine for anyone caught driving without a valid license.

According to official data, over 4,000 e-challans were issued across Karachi in the past 24 hours alone for a range of traffic violations. The majority — 2,737 challans — were handed out to drivers not wearing seat belts, highlighting widespread non-compliance with basic safety laws.

Other common offenses included 812 fines for riding without helmets, 116 for speeding, 169 for red-light jumping, and 157 for mobile phone use while driving. Additionally, authorities penalized 24 cases of illegal parking, four for overloading, 23 for stop-line violations, eight for wrong-way driving, and 56 for tinted windows.

DIG Traffic emphasized that the city’s e-challaning system is now fully operational, enabling digital monitoring and fines through surveillance cameras installed at key intersections. He clarified that the objective is not merely to penalize citizens but to enforce road safety and reduce accidents.

He further stated that no one will be exempted from the law, regardless of status or profession, and reminded motorists that the maximum speed limit remains 60 km/h within city limits.

This move comes as part of Karachi’s broader efforts to improve traffic discipline, reduce road accidents, and align with smart city initiatives that use technology for safer urban mobility.
