Karachi Activates 1,076 Smart Cameras for Digital Traffic Enforcement

The Karachi Traffic Police have officially activated 1,076 smart surveillance cameras across the city as part of an expanded digital traffic enforcement system, marking a major step toward smarter, safer, and more efficient urban mobility.

According to a spokesperson for the Karachi Traffic Police, the cameras are now fully operational at key intersections, highways, and public areas, allowing authorities to detect traffic violations, monitor congestion, and respond quickly to accidents — all in real time.

Smart Surveillance Across Karachi

The high-tech cameras are integrated with Karachi’s Traffic Control Center, where all video feeds are monitored around the clock. The system uses AI-based analytics and Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) technology to track violations such as:

  • Over-speeding
  • Signal jumping
  • Wrong-lane driving
  • Use of mobile phones while driving

The data is then processed through the city’s smart e-challan system, automatically issuing fines to violators via digital means.

Key Locations Covered

The surveillance network spans major arteries such as Shahrah-e-Faisal, I.I. Chundrigar Road, University Road, Korangi Road, and Lyari Expressway, as well as sensitive zones including Governor House, CM House, Airport terminals, and foreign consulates.

Other notable locations include Clifton, Saddar, Gulshan-e-Iqbal, Nazimabad, Sohrab Goth, and Malir, ensuring coverage across all major traffic corridors in Karachi.

Smarter Roads, Safer Commutes

Officials stated that the initiative aims to reduce human error in traffic enforcement and create a transparent, automated monitoring system. The move aligns with Karachi’s broader goal of adopting smart city technologies for better urban management.

By leveraging AI and real-time data, the Karachi Traffic Police hope to minimize accidents, curb reckless driving, and improve the daily commute for millions of citizens.

As digital traffic enforcement continues to expand, Karachi is positioning itself as a leader in intelligent transport systems in Pakistan — paving the way for safer and more efficient roads across the metropolis.
