In a major move towards modern urban management, the Karachi Metropolitan Corporation (KMC) has announced the launch of Karachi Smart Parking Services at ten high-traffic locations across the city. The initiative aims to tackle longstanding parking challenges, reduce illegal parking, and streamline traffic flow in Pakistan’s largest metropolis.
The new smart parking system is part of KMC’s wider modernization drive under Mayor Murtaza Wahab. According to KMC officials, this project will introduce digital ticketing, cashless payments, and real-time updates on parking availability — solutions designed to bring Karachi in line with global smart city trends.
In the first phase, ten busy areas have been chosen for the Smart Parking Services:
All these sites will feature boundary walls, upgraded surveillance systems, and improved lighting to ensure the safety and security of parked vehicles.
The Karachi Smart Parking system will eliminate the hassle of paper tickets and manual payments. Instead, drivers will benefit from digital ticketing and multiple cashless payment options, making the process faster and more convenient. Real-time updates on available parking slots will also help reduce unnecessary traffic congestion caused by drivers searching for space.
To implement the project, KMC’s Charged Parking Department has already floated tenders and invited an Expression of Interest (EOI) under a Public-Private Partnership (PPP) model. This approach is expected to attract private investment, ensuring that the service remains efficient, secure, and up to international standards.
A KMC spokesperson emphasized that this smart parking initiative will help Karachi move closer to becoming a smart city, adding that it’s a sustainable step toward digital transformation. It also builds on KMC’s earlier decision to offer free parking at 32 designated locations, further easing parking woes for citizens.
Once launched, the Karachi Smart Parking Services will play a crucial role in reducing illegal parking, improving traffic flow, and making public spaces more accessible for everyone. With enhanced security features, digital convenience, and organized vehicle management, Karachi is on its way to modern, tech-driven urban mobility.
