Karachi to Get a New 25-Km Road Parallel to Lyari Expressway for Heavy Traffic

Sindh Government Reveals Karachi Port Motorway Corridor Plan

Share

In a significant development for Karachi’s transport infrastructure, the Sindh Chief Minister Syed Murad Ali Shah has announced a new Karachi Port Motorway Corridor to link Karachi Port directly with the motorway network through the Shaheed Zulfikar Ali Bhutto Malir Expressway, commonly known as Shahrah-i-Bhutto.

Speaking at a top-level meeting at the Chief Minister House, the CM said that a dedicated corridor will be built stretching from Qayyumabad to Karachi Port, aiming to streamline the movement of heavy trucks and light vehicles alike. The new corridor is designed to support the massive flow of port traffic and connect key industrial zones like Port Qasim, Landhi, and Korangi with the national motorway system more efficiently.

Corridor Details and Timeline

According to CM Shah, the full Shahrah-i-Bhutto Expressway, which extends from Korangi Causeway to Kathore, is expected to be completed by December 2025. Additionally, a new connecting road from the National Highway to the motorway will open soon, adding another vital link for Karachi’s logistics and trade routes.

One of the most important segments of the Karachi Port Motorway Corridor is the stretch from Karachi Port to Qayyumabad, which will be built on priority to provide direct motorway access for trucks transporting goods from the port.

Public-Private Partnership for Better Infrastructure

To accelerate progress, a private company has submitted a Design, Finance, Operate, and Transfer (DFOT) proposal for the project. This plan includes a 16.5-kilometre road from Jam Sadiq Interchange to Karachi Port, featuring a 10.4-kilometre flyover passing through key areas like Boat Basin, Ziauddin Chowrangi, and East Wharf.

A comprehensive traffic survey has already been completed, and the corridor will be designed to handle both heavy trucks and light vehicles without disturbing residential areas. Special interchanges will be developed to ensure smooth traffic flow and minimal impact on nearby communities.

Broader Development Initiatives in Karachi

During the meeting, CM Murad Ali Shah also provided updates on other major infrastructure projects in Karachi. He confirmed that the Red Line Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) is progressing at a faster pace now, and redesign work for the busy Sohrab Goth roundabout is underway to help reduce congestion for daily commuters.

“These projects will not only improve connectivity but also transform the city’s overall look and benefit the people of Karachi,” the Chief Minister emphasized.

The meeting was attended by several high-ranking officials, including Minister Saeed Ghani, Mayor Murtaza Wahab, CM’s assistant Qasim Naveed, Chief Secretary Asif Hyder Shah, P&D Board Chairman Najam Shah, and Karachi Commissioner Hassan Naqvi.

A Step Towards a More Connected Karachi

The Karachi Port Motorway Corridor is expected to play a key role in strengthening Pakistan’s goods transport sector, boosting the economy, and easing urban traffic pressures in Karachi. With smart planning and private sector involvement, the Sindh government aims to deliver this vital infrastructure on time and with minimum disruption to citizens.

Stay tuned for more updates as work on Karachi’s modern transport network continues to move forward.
