In a major step toward digitizing traffic enforcement, Karachi Police are preparing to expand the city’s existing e-challan system by launching a dedicated mobile phone application for officers on duty. The initiative aims to improve road discipline by enabling real-time reporting of traffic violations observed directly on the streets.
Currently, Karachi issues e-challans primarily through Safe City surveillance cameras, which automatically capture traffic violations such as signal breaking and lane misuse. With the introduction of the mobile application, authorities plan to complement camera-based enforcement with on-ground reporting by traffic and police officers.
How the Karachi Police E-Challan Mobile App Will Work?
According to police officials, the mobile app has already been developed and is expected to begin operations on a trial basis in the coming days. Authorized officers of the Karachi Police will be permitted to download and use the application on their personal mobile phones during duty hours.
When an officer witnesses a traffic violation, the process will be straightforward. The officer will take a photograph of the offending vehicle using the mobile application and submit it instantly through the system. The captured image will then be automatically forwarded to the designated traffic police e-challaning officer for verification.
After reviewing the evidence, the traffic police officer will issue an e-challan to the vehicle owner. To ensure transparency and accountability, the issued challan will include identification details of the officer who reported the violation through the mobile app.
Improving Transparency and Traffic Discipline
Officials believe the new system will help address violations that often go unnoticed by fixed cameras, particularly in congested areas or on roads without surveillance coverage. By empowering officers to digitally report violations, the system aims to reduce manual fine issuance, limit on-the-spot disputes, and minimize chances of corruption.
The inclusion of officer identification details in each e-challan is expected to enhance trust in the system and provide a clear audit trail for every reported violation.
Part of a Broader Digital Policing Strategy
The expansion of the e-challan system reflects Karachi Police’s broader push toward technology-driven policing. Similar digital enforcement tools have been adopted in other major cities to improve compliance with traffic laws and streamline enforcement procedures.
Once fully implemented, the mobile app-based e-challan system could significantly improve traffic management in Karachi, a city that struggles with congestion, road safety challenges, and frequent violations.
As the trial phase begins, authorities are expected to monitor performance, address technical issues, and gradually roll out the system citywide. If successful, the initiative could mark an important milestone in Karachi’s efforts to modernize traffic law enforcement and promote safer roads for all commuters.
