Traffic congestion in Karachi may finally see major relief as the federal government pushes ahead with plans to expand the Karachi Northern Bypass into the new M-10 Motorway. The project is being described as a game-changing development that will improve connectivity, reduce travel times, and integrate Karachi more effectively into Pakistan’s national motorway network.

Project Details

The existing 57-kilometer Karachi Northern Bypass will be upgraded and extended into a six-lane, 134-kilometer M-10 Motorway. This new motorway will connect Karachi to the M-6 Motorway at Jamshoro by cutting through the Kirthar Mountain Range, creating a direct high-speed route between the country’s largest port city and the national highway system.

In addition to new construction, a 23-kilometer stretch of the existing bypass will be expanded into six lanes, forming a continuous high-capacity corridor from Karachi Port to M-6.

A Transformative Infrastructure Project

Officials have stressed that the M-10 Motorway is more than just a routine road upgrade. It is a transformative infrastructure initiative that will not only reduce congestion in Karachi but also strengthen regional trade and logistics. The new motorway is expected to:

  • Provide an alternative route for heavy vehicles entering and leaving Karachi.
  • Improve cargo transport efficiency from Karachi Port to upcountry destinations.
  • Reduce traffic bottlenecks within the city.
  • Promote economic activity by improving inter-provincial connectivity.

Government Commitment and Feasibility Study

The project was reviewed during a meeting between Federal Minister for Communications Aleem Khan and Sindh Chief Minister Syed Murad Ali Shah at the CM House. The meeting was informed that a feasibility study, led by the National Engineering Services Pakistan (Nespak), is already underway.

Minister Khan emphasized that the primary goal of the project is to ease Karachi’s heavy traffic burden by offering a direct, high-speed link to the national motorway network. Chief Minister Shah welcomed the federal government’s support, and both sides pledged to ensure timely and transparent completion of both the M-6 and M-10 Motorway projects.

The expansion of the Karachi Northern Bypass into the M-10 Motorway represents a significant step toward addressing Karachi’s chronic traffic issues. By integrating the city more effectively into Pakistan’s motorway network, the project promises to deliver long-term economic, logistical, and environmental benefits.
