By Karachi’s traffic authorities have introduced strict monitoring measures for heavy and commercial vehicles following alarming accident statistics. According to Karachi Traffic Police, nearly 90 to 95 people were losing their lives every month in 2025 due to accidents involving heavy transport vehicles. These figures prompted the government to take decisive steps to ensure safer roads for citizens.
The recently implemented Karachi Heavy Vehicle Tracker Law aims to significantly reduce road fatalities by enforcing real-time monitoring of vehicle movement and speed. According to DSP Kashif Nadeem, the law has already proven to be effective in improving road safety. Prior initiatives, including the citywide e-challan system, have helped reduce the monthly death toll to around 36 fatalities — a substantial improvement, yet authorities believe more control is necessary.
Under the new law, all Light Transport Vehicles (LTVs) and Heavy Transport Vehicles (HTVs) are required to install digital tracking devices. These trackers will share real-time data, including speed, route, and movement history, directly with the traffic control center. If a vehicle exceeds assigned speed limits or enters restricted zones, traffic authorities will be immediately alerted.
DSP Kashif Nadeem confirmed that violating installation requirements will result in fines up to Rs 100,000. So far, data from nearly 10,000 vehicles has already been integrated, allowing for improved traffic oversight.
In addition, heavy vehicles must obey the 30 km/h maximum speed limit within Karachi city limits. Any vehicle detected exceeding this speed will automatically receive an e-challan of Rs 20,000 for the offense.
Authorities believe the tracker system will not only help the police monitor traffic violations more effectively but will also benefit private transport companies by improving fleet discipline and safety standards.
Karachi residents and road safety advocates have welcomed the initiative, hoping it will pave the way for safer roads and reduced loss of life.
