Sindh Government Bans Heavy Vehicles During Daytime to Tackle Karachi’s Traffic Woes

In a major move to improve road safety and reduce traffic congestion in Karachi, the Sindh government has imposed a daytime ban on dumpers and heavy vehicles entering the city. These vehicles are now permitted to operate only between 11:00 PM and 6:00 AM. This decision aims to minimize road accidents and ensure smoother traffic flow in the bustling metropolis.

High-Level Meeting for Traffic Solutions

Chief Secretary Asif Hyder Shah, following directives from Chief Minister Sindh, convened an emergency meeting with key officials, including the Inspector General of Sindh Police, Commissioner Karachi, and heads of the Transport and Traffic Departments. The discussion focused on mitigating traffic congestion and enhancing road safety across the city.

Key Measures Announced

  • Vehicle Verification & QR Certification:
Authorities have mandated the physical verification of heavy vehicles and their drivers to ensure compliance with safety standards. All commercial vehicles must now obtain a QR Code-certified certificate from the Transport Department for better regulation.
  • Nighttime Waste Operations:
The Sindh Solid Waste Management Board has been instructed to shift waste collection operations to nighttime within the next three months.
  • Water Tanker Fleet Inspection:
The Karachi Water and Sewerage Board has a month to conduct a comprehensive safety inspection of its water tanker fleet.
  • Introduction of VICS:
The government will fast-track the province-wide Vehicle Inspection and Certification System (VICS) to ensure motorcycles and other vehicles meet safety standards.

Stricter Penalties and Public Awareness

To enforce road discipline, traffic fines have been increased fourfold. Reckless drivers will face strict penalties, including FIRs. Additionally, an extensive public awareness campaign on traffic regulations will be launched to educate citizens on road safety.

Strengthening Traffic Engineering Bureau

Chief Secretary Shah emphasized the need to revive and strengthen the Traffic Engineering Bureau to develop sustainable infrastructure, implement modern traffic management strategies, and enforce stricter regulations for long-term traffic solutions.

This comprehensive strategy reflects the Sindh government’s commitment to addressing Karachi’s traffic challenges, promoting road safety, and creating a more efficient urban transport system.
