The Karachi Metropolitan Corporation (KMC) has announced an ambitious citywide infrastructure rehabilitation plan aimed at improving road conditions, enhancing connectivity, and strengthening municipal services across Karachi. The initiative marks one of the most comprehensive urban repair drives in recent years and is expected to significantly ease traffic congestion while improving public safety.
The announcement was made during a high-level meeting of the KMC Engineering Department chaired by Karachi Mayor Murtaza Wahab. During the session, officials finalized policy guidelines, timelines, and implementation strategies to accelerate development work throughout the city.
183 Additional Roads to Be Repaired
According to an official statement issued after the meeting, the corporation will not only rehabilitate roads under its direct administrative control but will also repair 183 additional roads spread across all districts. The objective is to improve inter-district connectivity and ensure smoother traffic flow on heavily used routes.
Officials confirmed that priority will be given to major arterial roads and high-traffic corridors. At the same time, departments have been instructed to keep alternative routes operational during construction to minimize inconvenience for daily commuters and businesses.
Tenders to Be Issued Before Eid
Mayor Murtaza Wahab directed relevant departments to complete all administrative and technical formalities on a priority basis. He instructed officials to issue tenders before Eid so that construction activities can begin immediately afterward without delays. Emphasis was placed on maintaining consistent progress in line with the approved scope of work and timelines.
Solar Streetlights Planned for Jahangir Road
A key feature of the rehabilitation plan includes the transition of Jahangir Road to a solar-powered street lighting system, reflecting KMC’s focus on sustainable and energy-efficient solutions.
Municipal Commissioner Samira Hussain briefed participants on the criteria used to select roads across various districts, ensuring transparency and balanced development. She also highlighted the importance of integrating road repairs with improved streetlight management.
Improved Safety and Urban Mobility
The mayor also ordered comprehensive improvements in streetlight maintenance alongside road rehabilitation to ensure better-lit and safer roads throughout Karachi. Officials believe the combined upgrades will reduce accidents, enhance night-time visibility, and contribute to smoother urban mobility.
With large-scale rehabilitation planned across the metropolis, the initiative is expected to provide long-term relief to Karachi’s commuters while modernizing the city’s aging infrastructure and municipal services.
