In a major development aimed at improving public transport connectivity in Karachi, Sindh Senior Minister Sharjeel Inam Memon announced that the Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) Orange Line has been linked with the BRT Green Line. The integration is designed to enhance travel convenience for commuters journeying from Orangi Town to Numaish, one of the city’s busiest corridors.
The announcement was made during an inauguration ceremony at the Orange Line depot, where the minister highlighted the importance of integrated transport systems for a megacity like Karachi.
Single Ticket for Two BRT Lines
Previously, passengers traveling from the Orange Line to the Green Line were required to purchase separate tickets, increasing both travel costs and inconvenience. With the new integrated ticketing system, commuters can now travel seamlessly across both routes using a single fare.
The Orange Line operates between Orangi Town and North Nazimabad, while the Green Line runs from Surjani Town to Numaish via North Nazimabad. The shared interchange allows passengers to transfer smoothly between the two BRT corridors without exiting the system or paying an additional fare.
According to Sharjeel Inam Memon, this integration is expected to benefit nearly 100,000 passengers daily, significantly reducing travel time and expenses for thousands of daily commuters.
Rising Ridership Reflects Public Trust
While speaking to the media, the senior minister noted a sharp increase in daily ridership on the Green Line. He stated that during the previous federal government’s tenure, average daily ridership was around 55,000 passengers, which has now increased to nearly 80,000.
He attributed this growth to improved services, better management, and affordable fares. Memon emphasized that thousands of citizens rely on the BRT system every day, making it one of Karachi’s most important public transport networks.
Passenger Safety and Women-Friendly Initiatives
Memon also highlighted that the BRT buses are equipped with security cameras and modern passenger facilities, ensuring safer and more comfortable travel. In a significant step toward inclusivity, he announced that separate buses for women will be operated on both the Orange Line and Green Line, addressing long-standing concerns about safety and comfort for female commuters.
The integration of Karachi’s BRT Orange Line with the Green Line marks an important milestone in the city’s public transport evolution. By enabling seamless travel on a single ticket, the Sindh government aims to make mass transit more accessible, affordable, and efficient.
As ridership continues to grow, such initiatives are expected to reduce traffic congestion, lower emissions, and improve the overall commuting experience for Karachi’s residents.
