In a significant development for Pakistan’s infrastructure, four firms have successfully completed a feasibility study for a proposed 10-kilometer tunnel in the Kalar Kahar Salt Range. The project, located along the M-2 Motorway that connects Lahore and Islamabad, aims to address rising safety concerns and improve travel efficiency on this crucial route.

Addressing Safety Concerns

The Kalar Kahar stretch of the M-2 Motorway has long been notorious for accidents due to its challenging terrain and steep gradients. The proposed tunnel is a proactive solution to these issues, significantly improving safety for commuters traveling between Lahore and Islamabad.

According to a report by 24NewsHD TV channel, the General Manager of the National Highway Authority (NHA) has confirmed the completion of the feasibility study. The next step involves appointing a consultant to move the project closer to implementation.

Key Benefits of the Tunnel

The proposed 10-kilometer tunnel is expected to deliver numerous advantages:

  1. Enhanced Safety:
By bypassing the hazardous curves and inclines of the Kalar Kahar Salt Range, the tunnel will drastically reduce the risk of accidents.
  2. Reduced Travel Time:
The tunnel is projected to cut travel time between Lahore and Islamabad by approximately 25 to 35 minutes, offering greater convenience for commuters.
  3. Improved Connectivity:
The tunnel will provide a smoother, more reliable route for travelers and freight transport, boosting regional trade and mobility.

Progress and Planning

The idea for the tunnel was initially proposed during a meeting of the steering committee. With the feasibility study now complete, the NHA is focused on appointing a consultant to oversee the project’s design and execution.

This development marks a significant milestone in Pakistan’s efforts to modernize its road infrastructure and enhance the safety and efficiency of its transport network. Once completed, the Kalar Kahar tunnel will stand as a testament to the country’s commitment to addressing pressing infrastructure challenges while fostering economic growth.

As the project progresses, it holds the promise of transforming one of the M-2 Motorway’s most perilous sections into a safe, efficient, and traveler-friendly route.
