Federal Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi conducted an official inspection of the Jinnah Square underpass site on Murree Road and directed relevant authorities to ensure the project reaches full completion by the end of May 2025. This critical infrastructure development is a key component of Islamabad’s urban transformation plan, aimed at improving traffic flow and easing congestion in one of the city’s busiest corridors.

Underpass to Be Inaugurated on May 22

During the visit, Capital Development Authority (CDA) Chairman Muhammad Ali Randhawa briefed the minister on the status of the underpass, noting that approximately 75% of the construction work is already completed. Three out of four slip roads are operational, and partial traffic flow has been restored to facilitate public movement.

Minister Naqvi announced that the formal inauguration is scheduled for May 22, confirming that the remaining work will be fast-tracked to meet the timeline.

Focus on Landscaping and Urban Aesthetics

Despite the ongoing rainfall in the region, the minister expressed satisfaction with the quality and pace of construction. He emphasized the need for green spaces and quality landscaping around the underpass to not only enhance visual appeal but also to contribute to a more environmentally friendly urban setting.

Encroachment Removal Ordered Along Expressway

In addition to reviewing the underpass, Naqvi also inspected a bridge currently under construction nearby. During the tour, he issued clear directives for the immediate removal of illegal encroachments along the Expressway. He stressed that unauthorized structures must be removed without delay, as they hinder public infrastructure development and affect city aesthetics.

Vision for a World-Class Islamabad

The minister reiterated the government’s broader vision of transforming Islamabad into a world-class city, equipped with modern traffic infrastructure and urban facilities. The Jinnah Square underpass is a cornerstone of this vision, designed to streamline traffic flow, reduce congestion, and improve overall accessibility in the capital.

What’s Next?

With the May 22 inauguration date approaching, authorities are working around the clock to complete the remaining 25% of the project. The underpass, along with its connecting slip roads and beautification elements, is expected to significantly improve daily commuting for residents and visitors alike.

This timely intervention by Minister Naqvi underscores the government’s commitment to infrastructure progress and sustainable urban development. As Islamabad evolves, projects like these mark critical steps toward a more efficient and livable capital city.
