The Government of Pakistan has announced plans to resume the Islamabad–Tehran–Istanbul (ITI) freight train service) by December 31, 2025, marking a significant milestone in regional connectivity and trade cooperation. The long-awaited decision comes after the resolution of key trade, administrative, and logistical challenges that had suspended operations since 2022.
Speaking at a press conference, Federal Railways Minister Hanif Abbasi emphasized that the revival of the ITI freight train will play a crucial role in boosting regional commerce and strengthening economic partnerships among Pakistan, Iran, and Türkiye.
Enhancing Regional Connectivity and Trade
According to the minister, the ITI corridor will provide businesses across the three countries with a faster, cost-effective, and reliable freight transport solution compared to traditional sea routes. The project is part of Pakistan’s broader strategy to expand trade with neighboring regions and enhance the country’s logistical capacity.
In addition to the ITI initiative, Pakistan plans to establish a new rail link with Kazakhstan via Chaman, under a recently signed bilateral agreement. This project will open new trade corridors between South Asia and Central Asia, improving access for exporters and strengthening Pakistan’s position as a key regional transit hub.
Ongoing Railway Development Projects
Minister Abbasi also shared updates on other major railway upgrades. The rehabilitation of the Rohri–Karachi track—a vital section of Pakistan’s railway network—is set to begin in July 2026 with financial assistance from the Asian Development Bank (ADB). The upgrade will enhance train speed, safety, and reliability on one of the country’s busiest freight and passenger routes.
Meanwhile, the Shalimar Express—a popular passenger service between Karachi and Lahore—will resume operations on November 7, offering improved comfort and upgraded facilities.
Highlighting financial progress, the minister revealed that Pakistan Railways has earned Rs. 4.5 billion from cargo operations, reflecting improved efficiency and stronger operational performance.
Driving Economic Growth Through Rail Connectivity
The revival of the Islamabad–Tehran–Istanbul freight train represents a strategic step toward economic integration, trade facilitation, and sustainable transport development in the region. The government hopes these measures will restore public confidence in Pakistan Railways and support long-term economic growth.
