Islamabad–Rawalpindi to Get New Fast Train Service

In a major development for public transport, the federal government has approved plans to launch a modern Islamabad–Rawalpindi fast train service, aimed at making commuting between the twin cities faster, more convenient, and affordable.

The decision was finalized during a meeting chaired by Railways Minister Hanif Abbasi and Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi on Monday. Officials confirmed that the project will link Margalla Station in Islamabad with Saddar Station in Rawalpindi, reducing travel time to just 20 minutes.

Project Details

  • Route: Margalla Station (Islamabad) to Saddar Station (Rawalpindi).
  • Travel Time: Around 20 minutes.
  • Infrastructure: Ministry of Railways will provide the existing track system.
  • Operations: To be managed by the Capital Development Authority (CDA).
  • Timeline: A framework agreement is expected to be finalized and signed next week.

Authorities emphasized that the project will be implemented on a priority basis to provide citizens with immediate relief from road traffic and lengthy commutes.

Government’s Vision

Railways Minister Hanif Abbasi described the service as an “important public welfare initiative,” highlighting its role in making daily travel easier and more efficient.

Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi added that the project demonstrates the federal government’s commitment to improving citizens’ quality of life, while Minister of State for Interior Talal Chaudhry noted that the train service will not only provide a fast and affordable transport option but also help reduce congestion on the busy roads connecting the two cities.

Benefits of the Train Service

  1. Reduced Travel Time: Cutting commutes to 20 minutes will make daily travel smoother for thousands of passengers.
  2. Traffic Relief: Fewer private vehicles on the roads will help ease congestion and pollution.
  3. Cost-Effective: A more affordable option compared to fuel costs and long road journeys.
  4. Sustainable Mobility: Improved public transport contributes to a greener, more efficient urban infrastructure.

The Islamabad–Rawalpindi fast train service represents a significant step toward modernizing Pakistan’s urban mobility. By combining existing railway infrastructure with improved operational management under the CDA, the project is expected to provide reliable, affordable, and sustainable transport. With its launch prioritized, commuters could soon experience a major improvement in daily travel across the twin cities.
