The Islamabad Police has announced a tough stance on traffic violations, particularly wrong-way driving, which has become a major cause of accidents and congestion in the capital. According to officials, strict legal measures, including First Information Reports (FIRs), will now be registered against violators under the Pakistan Penal Code.
In a statement shared on its official X account, the Islamabad Police quoted Chief Traffic Officer (CTO) Captain (Rtd) Hamzah Humayun, stressing that reckless driving will not be tolerated. He confirmed that the police will act firmly against those endangering public safety on the roads.
FIRs Under Section 279 of the Pakistan Penal Code
The police explained that FIRs will be registered under Section 279 of the Pakistan Penal Code (PPC), which addresses rash or negligent driving on public roads.
The section states:
“Whoever drives any vehicle, or rides, on any public way in a manner so rash or negligent as to endanger human life, or to be likely to cause hurt or injury to any other person, shall be punished with imprisonment of either description for a term which may extend to [two years] or with fine which may extend to [three] thousand rupees, or with both.”
This means violators not only face monetary fines but also possible imprisonment of up to two years.
Targeting Wrong-Way Driving and Other Serious Offenses
