By The government has taken a significant step toward modernizing urban transport infrastructure by advancing plans to construct a state-of-the-art National Bus Terminal in Islamabad’s Sector I-11/4. The ambitious project aims to reduce traffic congestion, improve passenger facilities, and streamline intercity transport operations in the capital.
The development was reviewed during a high-level meeting held at the headquarters of the Capital Development Authority (CDA). The meeting was chaired by Muhammad Ali Randhawa and attended by senior officials from administration, engineering, planning, and environmental departments.
Project Overview and Capacity
Spread over approximately 31 acres, the proposed terminal is expected to become one of the largest and most modern transport hubs in Islamabad. According to officials, the facility will have the capacity to accommodate more than 100 buses, significantly easing pressure on existing terminals and roadside pick-up points.
The design blueprint includes:
- Dedicated bus bays for efficient boarding and departures
- Spacious parking areas for buses and private vehicles
- Commercial zones for shops and services
- Petrol pumps for operational convenience
Modern Facilities for Passenger Convenience
In addition to core transport infrastructure, the project aims to deliver a comprehensive travel experience. Planned facilities include:
- Service stations for vehicle upkeep
- A designated taxi stand for last-mile connectivity
- A maintenance workshop for buses
- Passenger-friendly waiting and service areas
These features are expected to improve both operational efficiency and passenger comfort, aligning with international standards for urban transport terminals.
Strategic Connectivity with 11th Avenue
A key highlight of the project is its planned linkage with the upcoming 11th Avenue. This connection is expected to play a crucial role in enhancing accessibility to the terminal while improving traffic flow in surrounding sectors.
Urban planners believe that integrating the terminal with a major roadway will help reduce congestion on existing routes and ensure smoother entry and exit for buses and commuters alike.
Focus on Design and Execution
During the meeting, Randhawa emphasized the importance of adopting a modern and high-quality design. He directed authorities to hold an open architectural competition, inviting professionals to contribute innovative ideas that combine efficiency with aesthetic appeal.
He also instructed relevant departments to expedite the hiring of consultants and finalize a transparent financial and operational model. This approach aims to ensure timely execution and sustainable management of the project.
